Home for £1 Scheme
In 2013, Liverpool City Council launched a bold initiative in Wavertree, offering homes for just £1 in an effort to help first-time buyers onto the property ladder and revitalise the local community. A decade earlier, in 2003, the council had intended to demolish the area and build new housing. However, the withdrawal of government funding in 2010 left 115 homes abandoned and derelict. Under the new £1 home scheme introduced by Mayor Joe Anderson, buyers were required to invest a minimum of £40,000 in renovations within the first year. Merco Developments has proudly contributed to this transformative project, working on 19 of these properties to help residents achieve their dream of homeownership while restoring the neighbourhood’s character and charm.
